heart breaker.
In a recent interview for thefabric katie boland is asked "what is the worst thing that has happened to you that most inspired you?" her answer genuinely brought me to tears on a level I can relate far too well. I always wonder if I find someone to keep me at home more, will I lose this fascination for all things love?

she answers "heartbreak. everything... man, I have so much in my life because of being heart broken. I owe pretty much how my life looks right now to having my heart broken. I took one of my old boyfriends out for lunch recently and thanked him so much for everything because without him I never would about started writing, I feel like I have a deeper understanding about myself and the world and a bunch of other bs about becoming a better artist... when you are heart broken especially for the first time, you think that nothing will ever make you feel better and so to know that you can get through that it was such a learning experience for me. and makes me feel really optimistic about the future. so thank you men"watch the beautiful video on thefabric and read more of katie's wisdomosity here.

ghetto family.
I MISS THIS... it's different than a 'miss' you feel for someone you don't see often or an old boyfriend. there are books and love blogs to get you through break ups. you can skype for more realistic visits with loved ones who are far. but what I am talking about is missing your flat mate(s) or as my university commonly called it 'house mates'. the family you create in your home away from home for four years of your life. waking up every day together, going through heart breaks, psychotic exams and amazing parties. why is there no therapy for this break up? It was definitely my most fulfilling relationship. and it really blows how we took for granted all living mere kegs distances apart. enough with the cloning scientists... I need more focus on tele-transportation.
I miss... sitting on roofs. bonfires. stupid costumes. cheap beer. bad music. and you.

your status updates bore me, but I'll keep you around in case you are the next gates or zuckerberg.
post grad and the time to build and expand your personal and professional network has never been so detrimental. so why is it that all I want to do is purge my contacts? one of my friends insists that every contact is a potential successor in your future, and another has a strict two hundred cap on her facebook friends- so where do you draw the line? Should you add everyone and accept each request on every social media platform? Does a 'de-friending' mean a burnt bridge? of course social media guru sidney eve matrix has already covered this on cyberpop. sidney relates and explains... "For me, the mass unfriending phenomenon is a teachable moment, which is why I’ve designed a course at Queen’s University starting in January, for fourth year students who are just about to graduate, on building a strong digital platform and persona." I am a year behind on this fantastic course, but I'll be sure to keep up with the slides and share. In the mean time read the brilliant article, platforms constructed and dismantled for your friending frustrations.
tweets that slayed me on this subject...
People need to stop combining their tweets with facebook... its bad enough your tweets suck. Now I gotta see them on my mini-feed. @ZAKLONGO
Everyday someone with 20 friends, and 1 profile picture, adds me to Facebook. @dylansHotFire

get that money.
When Honey Magazine asked rapper Nicki Minaj if she was dating anyone, she replied, “Yes. -- Benjamin Franklin.” In fact, she had a little advice for all her fans, “To all my Barbies out there, you date George Washington and Benjamin Franklin and Abraham Lincoln. You’ll be better off in life. Get that money.”

smart phone etiquette.
an extremely popular topic of debate is the use of smart phones over meals. there is nothing worse than wanting to have an important conversation with someone who is busy updating their twitter status. an easy solution is agree at the beginning of the meal (with a friend) the degree of casualness it will be, a phone glancing meal or a ringer off one. In general, any kind of first impression (date) or meal with those of older generations (who are not used to being attached to these devices) it is better to check your messages on a bathroom break. a great issue brought up in the ny times is should google be allowed at dinner? "What if a few clicks of the smartphone can answer a question, solve a dispute or elucidate that thoughtful point you were making? What if that PDA is not being used to escape a conversation but to enhance it?" interesting.

I am so over this canadian winter. take me back to the sunshine. and do not tell me that it is not canadian of me. snow can stay on the mountains, ice can stay on rinks and I will happily sport my canada goose and mangled uggs in either of those locations with canadian pride. it's not like our forefathers woke up in this weather and went "SNOW again! oh wow lovely I can not wait to be FREEZING all day and lose a finger to frost bite".
